As is well known, Statsbanerne has for several years acquired a fairly significant number of shunting tractors of various types and performance, mainly intended for use in places where the shunting work was light and of relatively small scope, and where therefore a steam shunting tractor even of Statsbanerne's smallest types care was oversized for the incidental work.

The still relatively very high coal prices in connection with the fact that the otherwise very well-earned ranger locomotives letter Hs have gradually reached such a high age that repairs and renewals of more important parts will mean a very significant increase in maintenance costs, led to consideration of, how these machines could most conveniently be replaced by diesel-powered shunting machines. From these considerations, it was concluded that by using a diesel engine with about 150 hp in connection with a mechanical gear, a solid vehicle could be constructed which, with reasonable maintenance costs, could at least replace the Hs engine. With regard to the engine power, it must be remembered that in the case of shunting work, it is generally not a matter of achieving any major power (hp), but of having a reasonable traction for safe and fast starting of the very varying shunting features.

Such a shunting locomotive must necessarily be relatively expensive to procure, but robustness and solidity must be considered absolutely crucial characteristics of a shunting machine. However, due to the low price of solar oil compared to coal, there is such a significant saving on the fuel account that it enables return and depreciation of even a relatively significant acquisition cost, provided, of course, that the tractor is utilized appropriately and economically. Of what magnitude the fuel savings are, it can be seen from the fact that an Hs machine per rangertime on average uses 5 á 6 kr. coal, while the cost of solar oil for a 60 hp tractor is around 1.20-1.50 kr., ie a quarter; to this saving will in many cases come a significant saving in custody expenses.

The result of all the considerations was then that the State Railways at Ardelt-Werke in Germany in 1950 ordered 6 pcs. 160 hp diesel shunting tractors with a special gear unit manufactured by this plant.

Before the purchase took place, the special gear was known to Statsbanerne, as, among other things, from the end of the war have used some shunting tractors with gear device of the type in question partly taken over from the occupying power, however, only intended for the transfer of approx. 80 hp.

The 160hp tractors have proven to be very suitable for Danish conditions, which is due to the special properties of the special gear device, as they can use very heavy pulls when driving at low speeds during shunting, partly due to the special construction can also carry trains with speeds of up to 60 km per hour and thus used for long-distance driving e.g. with freight wagons from the home station to such stations on adjacent lines where the long-distance trains do not stop. These properties allow a very intensive utilization of the tractors.

It has proved possible with tractors of this type and size to perform warehouse shunting and shunting, which has hitherto required a traction force of size at least as liter Hs, just as it has proved possible with these tractors in some cases to replace F-machines, where their traction is not fully utilized.
